Applied Science (Medical Profile) BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma

Course type: BTEC/UAL Level 3 Diplomas • Awarding/exam body: Edexcel
Equivalent to 3 A levels.

The course is designed to provide experience of activities carried out by scientists. It allows students to apply and build on their existing science knowledge, skills and understanding in an industry-related context. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be qualified to seek employment or undertake further study, such as HND/degree courses in an applied science-related subject.

Course Assessment

Assessment includes both internal and external examinations. There are two external examinations per year, each assessment taken under specified conditions then marked by Pearson. Learners must achieve pass grade or above in all external assessments. External assessments are available twice a year and learners are permitted one resit attempt during the programme. Internal examination includes traditional written coursework, word processed assignments, short practical reports, longer practical investigations, presentations, field trips, industry visits, research tasks, and more. Each unit is graded as pass, merit or distinction against specific assessment criteria; these grades are translated to a point score for each unit. The sum of the points total for each unit determines the overall grade. A student achieving three distinction grades for the course has a qualification equivalent to three A grades at A Level.

This Course Can Lead To…

Progression to degree courses including Applied Science, Medical Sciences, Applied
Biology, Applied Chemistry, Pharmacology, Dental Technology, Nursing, Sports Studies and
Therapy and Exercise Studies. Alternatively, this qualification can also lead to direct employment in
a science related area such as laboratory work. The Extended Diploma will earn you UCAS points
in the same way that A levels do. Please note that this course is NOT sufficient if you wish to become
a doctor, veterinary surgeon or dentist and an additional access course may be required.
